EDINBURGH, Jan. 25 – The most comprehensive HPC On-Demand service in Europe has been created by combining access to HECToR, the UK's national computing service, with 2 new systems: an IBM BlueGene/Q and Indy, a dual configuration Linux-Windows HPC cluster. Accelerator is provided by EPCC, the world-class supercomputing centre at the University of Edinburgh.
Accelerator’s unique mix of facilities is designed to meet the computational needs of any size of business, from SME to multinational. Customers choose when to access the service and they pay only for the compute resource used. Accelerator has the capability to support a wide range of modelling and simulation scenarios, from the simple modelling of subsystem parts through to the modelling of entire systems in life sciences, energy, pharmaceuticals and engineering.
Combined with the ability to run multiple simulations in parallel, Accelerator can dramatically reduce discovery and innovation timescales.
Security is a prime consideration of the service. Accelerator’s hardware - including petabyte-scale data storage - is housed in EPCC’s world-class Advanced Computing Facility, which was purpose-built to provide the highest levels of physical and online security. Service access is governed by tightly controlled security and access procedures, with users managing all their own data, code and resource usage through unique, secure accounts.
Accelerator's support structures draw on EPCC’s deep expertise in HPC. A dedicated support service for users is underpinned by our staff of over 70 highly-qualified HPC experts, who can provide additional in-depth project assistance as required.
Accelerator’s growing customer list includes Oxford Nanapore Technologies, FIOS Genomics, Vattenfall, Deep Casing Tools and Rock Solid Imaging, with many more companies currently undertaking piloting and benchmarking tests. Vattenfall AB, for example, used HECToR to model the entire Lillgrund offshore wind farm, one of the world’s largest. The resulting model provides Vattenfall with a generic compute tool that greatly reduces the time and cost of introducing new wind farm installations.
