FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 5, 2012 — SGI, the trusted leader in technical computing, is upgrading its Rackable servers powered by AMD Opteron processors with the latest AMD Opteron 6300 series processors. These servers are in use across a broad range of applications, including astrophysics, earth sciences, including climatology and seismology, computer-aided design, and Cloud storage.
The new AMD Opteron 6300 Series processors strike the ultimate balance between performance, scalability and cost effectiveness to help IT organizations lower total cost of ownership (TCO). Performance per watt is up to 37 percent1 higher than the prior generation solutions, which means that datacenters running large-scale software deployments will be able to enjoy the industry's high performance as well as the low TCO. AMD continues to drive HPC performance with the 6300 Series processors using optimizations in compilers and libraries combined with the next-generation core architecture. AMD has delivered industry-leading results with the Opteron 6300 series in key HPC applications such as the molecular dynamics workloads LAMMPs and NAMD.
SGI Rackable servers powered by AMD Opteron processors are offered in completely managed solutions built from best of breed components tested and integrated by SGI Engineering. The solutions include SGI Management Center and SGI Performance Suite software for easy administration and performance optimization as well as SGI InfiniteStorage NAS and direct-attach storage. eResearch SA (eRSA) is the provider of high-performance computing, data management and storage, research collaboration, and visualization services for researchers in South Australia. eRSA recently commissioned the Tizard machine, named for James Tizard a past director of eRSA who passed away in 2011. The Tizard system is six times more powerful than the previous eRSA supercomputer and includes SGI Rackable servers powered by AMD Opteron as compute nodes.
