MEUDON LA FORÊT, Nov. 22 -- HPC Project, who specializes in high performance simulation, and SGI announced that they have signed a partnership agreement to integrate and cross-distribute some of the two companies' products. In particular, the first integration concerns Wild Cruncher from HPC Project and Altix UV servers from SGI.
The hardware component of HPC Project appliances is a Wild Systems node, an HPC Project brand. These nodes are designed for combining computing performance with office environment requirements. They integrate the high range of Intel and NVIDIA subsystems. For larger configurations, it is necessary to replace the Wild Node by bigger servers. This is the goal of the agreement between HPC Project and SGI.
The first product to benefit from this agreement is Wild Cruncher, an appliance dedicated to Scilab, an open source numerical simulation environment. With Wild Cruncher, Scilab users get impressive performance gains. Wild Cruncher translates Scilab scripts into C, parallelizes the C source, compiles it and executes it.As an example, a 1,000x1,000 Mandelbrot function written with Scilab is accelerated by 12,000 on a Wild Node (2x4 cores) and by 45,000 on an Altix UV server (4x8 cores). The Wild Cruncher UV version is based on the Altix UV family.
"SGI and HPC Project have on the simulation markets a converging approach," says Jean-Pierre Boushira, Southern Europe General Manager at SGI. "HPC Project expertise in software parallelization and optimization is a key factor for getting the best out of SGI systems."

SGI designs clusters architectures and storage solutions dedicated to the needs in numerical simulation in the HPC community.
