Advanced technology to usher in new era of communications and scientific discovery
NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 15 -- Juniper Networks today announced the industry's first demonstration of a standards-based 100G core-to-edge network, powered by the newly introduced Juniper Networks T4000 Core Router and the MX3D Series Universal Edge Router. Juniper will be showcasing a live demonstration of the network, running on the Junos operating system, during Supercomputing 2010 (SC10), the premier international conference on high-performance computing, networking, storage and analysis, being held November 15-19, in New Orleans.
100G networking technology is vital to the continued growth of IP-based services and applications, including supporting traffic from wireless and wired broadband devices as well as data-intensive applications, such as cloud computing and collaborative scientific research. With the T4000 and the MX Series, both powered by Junos Trio technology, the end-to-end network demonstration will highlight the new levels of performance and capacity necessary to meet user experience requirements into the next decade.
100G: Enabling New Frontiers of Communications and Scientific Discovery
In addition to meeting the bandwidth demands of service providers around the world, the next-generation high-performance processing innovations of Juniper's routing portfolio will help usher in a new era of scientific discovery. For example, by connecting to Internet2's recently announced 100Gbps research network powered by the T Series, scientists accessing the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will be able to accelerate the processing of terabytes of data in the quest to advance our scientific understanding of the universe. The same research network will also increase the data transfer capabilities between the two telescopes of the Gemini Observatory located in Hawaii and the Chilean Andes, allowing astronomers to access skies in both hemispheres simultaneously.
"Internet2 is creating a high-capacity network that will enable advanced networking features for more than 200,000 essential community anchor institutions, and high-capacity bandwidth is a requirement for successfully building and running that network," said Rob Vietzke, Internet2 executive director of network services. "With next-generation 100G platforms, we will support advanced research and education applications that are not possible today, but will impact our economy tomorrow."
Extending History of Investment Protection While Improving Capacity and Performance
Juniper's next-generation T4000 Core Router provides the scalability and flexibility required to meet rapidly expanding network bandwidth requirements. The T4000 extends Juniper's history of innovation and investment protection by more than doubling the per slot capacity from 100G to 240G in every existing T640 and T1600 chassis. Upgrading from T640 and T1600 to T4000 can be done with non-disruptive in-service upgrades, with multichassis capability architected into the system. In addition, the T4000 is designed for optimum power efficiency. At 2.7 watts of power per Gigabit of processed traffic, the T4000 is more than three times as efficient as the T1600, which is the most power efficient core router of its generation.
Juniper's MX3D edge routers directly address enterprise and service provider requirements for more flexible technology and business models. MX3D routers deliver a 'universal edge' routing solution for business, residential and mobile services at massive scale on a single network. With the 100G interface for the MX3D and the new T4000 Core Router, Juniper will provide customers with a true 100G solution from core to edge.

The T4000 will be available in 2H 2011. The company's MX3D Series Universal Edge Routers are generally available today with 100GE interfaces available in 2011.
