Industry's fastest core router designed to support multimedia and advanced cloud services for the new network with unmatched investment protection
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 15 -- Juniper Networks today introduced its next-generation and the industry's fastest core routing platform that delivers breakthrough levels of performance with the new network economics necessary to support service provider business models into the next decade. Juniper Networks T4000 Core Router, powered by the Junos operating system, provides the scalability and flexibility required to meet rapidly expanding bandwidth requirements, while extending the unprecedented investment protection of the T Series platform, the most widely-deployed core routing platform in the world.
At 240 Gbps/slot, the T4000 is the industry's fastest and densest IP/MPLS router, built and optimized for transport networks, the service provider backbone and major peering points around the world. With four terabits of line rate throughput in a half rack chassis, the T4000 is purpose-built to facilitate the continued rapid increase in multimedia applications, including enterprise collaboration and mobile video conferencing as well as new and emerging cloud and research applications.

The T4000 is being introduced as Internet traffic patterns are increasingly more dynamic with video, cloud computing and mobile applications placing new demands on the network. ABI Research projects that US mobile data traffic will grow more than 500 percent in the next four years to reach more than 3,200 petabytes by 2014. With Internet traffic expected to increasingly include some form of video, the higher network core capacities of the T4000 will be essential to meeting subscriber expectations of reliable connectivity to rich media content.

T4000 Extends Unmatched History of Investment Protection
The T4000 extends Juniper's history of flexibility, performance and investment protection by enabling existing T640 and T1600 core routers to be upgraded to T4000 without service disruption or changing customer-facing interfaces. All generations of the T Series have multichassis capability built into the architecture and support the same consistent Junos operating system deployed in every one of the top 100 service providers worldwide.

Power Efficiency for a Lower Carbon Footprint
The T4000 is designed for optimum power efficiency and shows dramatic improvement in the watt per bit processed by most competitive platforms. At 2.7 watts of power per Gigabit of processed traffic, the T4000 is more than three times as efficient as the T1600, which is the most power-efficient core router of its generation.

Availability and Flexible Interfaces
The T4000 will support a diversity of interfaces, optimized to deliver the benefits of 10/40/100GE. In addition to supporting all existing T640 and T1600 interfaces, the new interface cards include:
The T4000 will be showcased in a live demonstration at the Supercomputing conference (SC10) in New Orleans, November 15-19. The T4000 will be available in 2H 2011.
