Orlando, Florida January 12th, 2011 -- Researchers at Virginia Tech are using the R/parallel programming language, available on Sabalcore's highperformance Linux clusters, to develop statistical applications to analyze systems biology problems. Systems biology is important as a new approach to aid in discoveries in bio-medicine and pharmaceuticals by focusing on complex interactions in biological systems.
R/parallel is an implementation of the “R” Project. “R” is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. “R” provides a variety of statistical techniques including linear and nonlinear modeling, time-series analysis, classification, and clustering.
“Sabalcore's HPC on-demand services have been of great help in allowing us to run R/parallel for our simulation needs in a remote, cloud-based, environment. We need to use high-performing parallel computing to help solve our systems biology problem.” said Rajat Singhania, a final year student researcher under the direction of Dr. John Tyson, a University Distinguished Professor of Computational Cell Biology at the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech.
Singhania is using Sabalcore services to run hundreds of iterations of an evolutionary algorithm in parallel, there by speeding up the process. “Sabalcore services are very reliable, speedy, and definitely user-friendly. The crucial aspect of the whole service is that we are guaranteed to get all the 8 cores we need at any time, unlike academic and public servers where one has to jostle with other users for processing power.
