Engine Yard AppCloud Adoption Fuels Company Growth

1500 customers reap benefits of deploying production apps to rails application cloud

SAN FRANCISCO, November 9, 2010 -- Engine Yard, the leading cloud computing Platform-as-a-Service for Ruby on Rails, today announced that company growth has been fueled by customer adoption of Engine Yard AppCloud. Over 1,500 customers in a broad range of industries -- including healthcare, social media, non-profit, ecommerce and financial services -- have deployed their applications on AppCloud since its launch one year ago.

"Engine Yard is specialized in Ruby on Rails, provides excellent customer support, and offers a solution that has a great cost/benefit ratio. They offer flexibility and scalability to help us meet the demands of our 1.1 million registered users and support our customer growth," said Tim Murphy, vice president of products, Catalog Choice. "With Engine Yard AppCloud, we can easily handle our weekly traffic spikes as well as periodic traffic increases of over 100 percent. We can quickly spin up additional instances when we need them, and with this increased flexibility we have reduced our deployment costs by two-thirds."

Customers are experiencing rapid business growth and achieving significant milestones running mission-critical applications on Engine Yard AppCloud. Some of their impressive results include:

  • Vitrue -- a social media management platform for marketers of all kinds, including Fortune 1,000 brands, agencies and small businesses, has served over 320 million fans.
  • Get Satisfaction -- a social CRM platform, used by over 44,000 customer communities, serves 5 million customers generating millions of monthly page views.
  • PlayMesh -- a game producer that brings social games to the iPhone; they delivered 15 Top 25 games in the past year to their 13 million registered users, including iFarm by PlayMesh which became the #1 iPhone App and was downloaded 1 million times in just 10 days.

AppCloud meets the requirements for a range of Rails applications, from smaller-scale Web applications that run within a single compute instance to larger applications that require the elasticity, scalability and reliability of a Rails Application Cloud.

"Engine Yard AppCloud is a scalable, reliable platform that's been developed and fine-tuned by cloud experts," said John Schult, Director of Product Engineering of Vitrue. "We have an easy and repeatable deployment process that is 200 percent better than managing our own datacenter. Running our apps in the cloud has given us more control because we have monitoring tools and support experts at Engine Yard to ensure maximum uptime while servicing over 320 million fans and handling millions of requests per week. With the significant time and cost savings of deploying on Engine Yard AppCloud, we're able to focus on developing new products for our growing list of Fortune 1000 customers."

Engine Yard provides Ruby on Rails developers with a Platform as a Service (PaaS), including public and private cloud offerings, for deploying Rails applications in the Cloud. The Engine Yard PaaS offerings provide a curated and optimized Ruby on Rails stack, a set of best of breed deployment and application monitoring tools, and access to Engine Yard's support and professional services organization. Customers rely on Engine Yard to provide a scalable and reliable deployment platform that allows them to focus on development without having to build in-house expertise to deploy and manage applications.

"Cloud computing is the most disruptive technology to come to commerce since the PC," said John Dillon, CEO of Engine Yard. "With the rapid adoption of AppCloud, we are empowering businesses to focus on building applications that delight their customers and deliver value that leads to competitive advantage rather than investing precious development resources to procure and manage internal infrastructure. This freedom allows development teams to speed up the pace of innovation and bring new products to market faster."
